The Dreaded ‘D’ Word

My husband is usually a kind man. He takes good care of me and frequently indulges me with his attention. He makes it easy to entertain by doing so much of the work to prepare and he is always a happy participant at our parties. We make a good match.

So why the serious expression as he pointed to several real estate listings he wanted me to see?

I gulped as I perused them. Arkansas. Arizona. Texas.

“What’s going on?” I asked. Not that there’s anything wrong with these states. I’m sure millions of people are content living there. These fine states have produced presidents, world-renowned spas, and an awesome film festival. But I’m a California girl. Most of my friends and family are California people, too. Nearly all my writing colleagues and filmmaking connections were in California.

“As I said, we need to downsize,” my husband replied. He stressed the word, ‘downsize.’
